Absenteeism: The Bottom-Line Killer, a study by the industrial workforce consulting firm Circadian, says unscheduled absenteeism costs roughly $3,600 per year for each hourly worker and $2,650 each year for salaried employees.

In the average hourly workplace, typical unscheduled absenteeism rates range from 5 to 10 percent (i.e., at any given time 5 to 10 percent of the workforce is missing from work), according to Circadian.

The real problem is “no-shows” – you’re missing a worker who hasn’t even bothered to tell you they’ll be out. Even if you have a problem employee, you are better off if you are at least notified.

In addition to the costs, no-shows are bad for morale. Other employees have to pick up the slack, and worker harder and faster to cover for their missing colleague. It gets old quick. It can also damage the restaurant’s reputation, as diners turn away because of bad / slow service, which is not you at all. It’s because of a no-show.

  • Safety hazards. Employees who are rushing to get work done, or less-experienced employees doing work they are not adequately familiar with or trained for, are more likely to have or cause accidents. Tired employees are more likely to cause more frequent and severe accidents, as well.

Finally, unnecessary / unapproved absenteeism breeds discontent and further absenteeism as workers who are on-time every day grow fatigued and demoralized by being overworked. Circadian says absenteeism is 7.8 percent per year in facilities with few fatigue issues, and 8.9 percent in facilities with more fatigue problems.
